Permanent Authentication of Coatings

Extremely tiny quantities of a range of special covert pigments or Tracer materials called DatatraceDNA (DNA = Digital Nanoparticle Authentication) may be incorporated within various surface coatings.  When the coatings are then interrogated with a digital, hand-held electronic reader, each Tracer provides a unique fingerprint that serves as a secure and invisible code as well as an indicator of homogeneity.  This code is present wherever the Tracer compounds are present.  The code unequivocally identifies the origin and “cradle-to-grave” life history of the article.

The following common coatings have been successfully tested and/or implemented using the DatatraceDNA system. The DatatraceDNA Tracer material is extremely tough and will withstand temperatures up to around 1200 degrees Celsius.

Paints, including standard industrial and household paints, specialized paints (such as marine), spray paints, aerosol paints.  The key issue in all paint applications is to maintain the DatatraceDNA Tracer evenly suspended in the paints.  The Tracers have a high specific density (typically around 4 g/cc).  Paints may need surfactant formulations to maintain an even suspension, or they may need to be continuously agitated.

Paint colorants, including standard industrial and household pigments.

Powder Coatings, including electrostatically applied, oven-baked powder paints, and coatings applied by gas-dynamic spray technology ("cold-spray").  Provided the particle sizes are well-matched, the DatatraceDNA Tracers are well-suited and easily integrated into such applications.

Lacquers and inks, including printed coatings on everything from FMCG packaging to carton boxes.  There are typically no issues in integrating the DatatraceDNA Tracers in such coatings.

Polymer laminates and heat-formed coatings, including laminates on Driver's licenses, passports, ID Documents and the like.  The Tracers may be incorporated into or onto such laminates with relative ease.

Building materials, including cement renderings and the like.  Tracers may be economically incorporated into building materials using existing processes such as admixtures.

Adhesives and polymer-based spray-coatings, including coatings for mobile/cell phones and automotive parts.

Datatrace DNA has been successfully employed to unambiguously identify a wide range of materials, including paints, lacquers, and printing inks, as well as metallic parts treated with various powder-coating techniques and is also a scientific measure of Homogeneity (see pictures on the back of this page).

The pictures show a DatatraceDNA Reader demonstrating that a coating is authentic and the true homogeneity of the coating. The two samples are painted with the same colour containing two Tracers. They look similar however the DatatraceDNA Reader accurately shows that the right paint sample (top picture) has not been well mixed as the Tracers display levels of 259 and 49 and the left paint sample (bottom picture) has almost perfect homogeneity as the Tracers display 125 and  124.
